Varroa and Colony Health

Varroa destructor is a mite the size of a pinhead that feeds on the fat body of a developing bee and injects viruses while it does. Its population doubles roughly every month while there is capped brood to breed in, so a colony that starts spring with a hundred mites can end summer with more than a thousand. It is the single largest cause of managed colony loss everywhere it exists.
