An apple or cherry flower needs its pollen carried from another tree, and bees do most of that carrying. With no hives nearby, wild bees and hoverflies still set some fruit, often about half a crop.

A couple of colonies within a few hundred metres at blossom time is what growers pay for: more flowers set, and the fruit is rounder and heavier.
