The books / The Beekeeper's Year / chapter 10 of 10
Somewhere colder, somewhere hotter
All chapters
The shape of the year travels, but not unchanged. In the boreal forests of Finland, raspberry and fireweed give honeys of their own. Where the bees cannot fly for months, extension advice is about 40 kilograms (90 pounds) of honey in the hive going into winter.
Mediterranean Spain has a third of the country's beekeepers, 42% of its colonies and half of its honey, and the bigger an operation there, the more its hives travel to follow the flowers. The Asian hornet, which reached Europe in 2004, hunts at hive entrances, taking foragers in the air as they come home.
In this game a farm in the cold north wants 36 kg of stores before winter and has bears at any yard without a fence, but no hornet. A Mediterranean farm has the hornet from its first summer and wants 30 kg, and in its August dearth a weak colony can be robbed out or taken by hornets unless you feed it, narrow its entrance and guard it.
